The Secret to Finding God

On a recent visit with some close friends in Denver, I had three “close encounters” with the divine when our hosts took us to an extraordinary park and nature center near their home. As we wandered amongst the spectacular red rock formations, it was easy to see why the park had been called “Garden of the Gods” by the two surveyors who named it. The grandeur of landscape instantly sparked a feeling of awe and reverence within me, and called to mind the creative force behind it. What an incredible

Popo! Popo! Read Us A Book!

Rita and I have been blessed with the world’s two most amazing, inquisitive, and lovable grandsons. I know you’re thinking that every grandparent says that, but I assure you, in our case, it is actually true! They are four and six years young at the present time, but it seems like those numbers are changing all too fast. One day on a recent visit, they had a familiar request/command: “Popo, read us a book!” They each handed me a few of their favorites. The one on top immediately took me

A Pocketful of Eggs

I was cooking up a big pan of scrambled eggs when Molly came over and said, “Terry, we’ve got plenty of help back here. We could use you better out in the social room talking with folks!” Our adult Sunday school class was volunteering to help serve breakfast at an inner-city church. In some ways working in the kitchen provided volunteers with a legitimate hiding place. You could be serving without having to step out of your comfort zone by interacting with the guests, most of whom were struggling for

The Runaway Street Preacher

One Sunday afternoon after a special council meeting at a downtown church in Allentown I went for a walk just to check out some of the recent changes in the city. I came across a young man, probably in his thirties, who was preaching on a busy street corner. He had his hat on the ground with a sign: “$ for food and housing.” At the beginning of his sermon, he explained how he started his “life of evangelism” several months earlier. He then read a passage from Luke 14:

Navigating Uncharted Territory

You’ve heard that coincidence is God’s way of staying anonymous? Well, I had to wonder what God might be trying to tell me when in less than a month I “just happened” to encounter three very concerned grandparents facing remarkably similar struggles regarding grandchildren they loved. The first incident occurred when a long-time friend and I caught up on the way to a party. Almost immediately Dorothy hit me with the question, “Terry, what are the odds of having two out of three grandchildren in the same family turn out

Parable in the Parking Lot

When I pulled into the grocery store, I was expecting to get some vegetables, not step into a Bible story come to life. The Bi-Lo certainly didn’t give me any hints. It was a little run down and the rickety carts in the parking lot looked like they might have been around in Moses’ day, but nothing out of the ordinary. On my way to the entrance to the store, a very thin senior black man with a weathered face and a full head of snow white hair coached a

The Whole Truth?

On the way to the recreation center I met an older gentleman walking a small fur ball on steroids! I expect this little four-legged creature’s only goal each day was to meet and greet as many humans as “doggily” possible! Even non-dog lovers would be won over by this enthusiastic little charmer who greeted me like an old friend he hadn’t seen in years. He was ecstatic when I bent down to pet him. The old man said, “My little friend has the unique ability to pick out sensitive, caring

Celebrating Characters!

I love meeting new people. Every single person is unique, with their own unique history, personality, and perspective. But some people are, shall we say, more unique than others! Some terms I have heard to describe these people on the far end of the continuum are oddball, offbeat, quirky, peculiar, strange, kook, weirdo, eccentric, and “not playing with a full deck.” Personally, I call them characters. One of the easiest ways to spot an authentic character is to observe the general public‘s reaction to them. It can be rolling of

What Happened to the Unicorns?

The sanctuary was filled with alligators! There were also long-necked geese (I’m sure some of the older folks were concerned about the carpeting!), humpty-backed camels, some excited chimpanzees, and they’d even managed to somehow fit an elephant through the front door. But most extraordinary of all were the unicorns. I had never seen such a herd of the magical creatures! It was Sunday morning and the children’s choir was singing The Unicorn Song, the charming piece by Shel Silverstein and set to music by the Irish Rovers, which imagines that
